Fifth Avenue Place

This 1980s postmodernist skyscraper replaced the beloved Jenkins Arcade. The bottom floors of the tower are also a shopping arcade, and a rather pleasant one, but old-timers will tell you it’s just not the same.

Fifth Avenue Place is across a rather complicated intersection from the Gateway Center subway station.

  1. Amen on the Jenkins Arcade. One of my uncles had his medical office there, and the place was a real time capsule. O’Hanlon’s Opticians, Parker Buttons, and the A.G. Trimble company spring to mind. Upstairs, endless, noir-ish corridors of tile floors and pebbled glass doors with painted lettering. All wrapped in a bronze screen to look more modern in the wake of Gateway Center.
