Jeannette Office Building, Jeannette

Jeannette is a pleasant little city in the eastern suburbs. Downtown is not as lively as it used to be, but it does have this one fine Art Deco office building, which is poetically named the Jeannette Office Building.

  1. I think that you overestimate Jeannette a bit. I worked there for 7 years and still work for one of the half dozen companies that are all that remain of a city which once produced much of the world’s glass, among other things. After I did my first interview with the company, I took a drive around the city to see if it would be worth looking for an apartment there. It took about 15 minutes for me to pull out my phone and look for the next town down the road.

There are a couple high points, though. St. Barbara’s Catholic Church (the one on top of the hill), for instance. The interior feels like you’ve been transported to medieval Europe. (Other parts of the town create the same impression, but for very different reasons.)

The former site of the Westmoreland Glass Company is about as picturesque an industrial ruin as you could ask for and a great place to do some urban exploring (commonly known as ‘trespassing’).

    1. “Pleasant” doesn’t necessarily mean interesting, although—as you point out—there are some interesting things in Jeannette. But there are many quiet back streets of older houses that look like very pleasant places to live. Live in the boring neighborhoods and visit the interesting ones: that is a good prescription for a happy life.
